A 33-year-old man was fatally struck by a car when he ran into traffic chasing after his dog.

On Monday afternoon, in Kingsport, Tennessee -- about 100 miles east of Knoxville -- an incident occurred.

When the Kingsport Police Department Traffic Unit responded to a call regarding a motor vehicle striking a pedestrian 

as it travelled north on Lynn Garden Drive, authorities said that the vehicle had been speeding at the time of the collision.

The Kingsport Police Department said that the victim ran into the roadway, directly into its path, chasing after a dog.

It was initially reported that 33-year-old Gordon Gale Johnson was taken to a local area hospital by Sullivan County EMS for treatment of his injuries.
